Skills

Skilled people, better jobs is one of our four key priorities set out in our refreshed Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) to help us deliver our vision to be a globally recognised economy where good growth delivers high levels of prosperity, jobs and quality of life for everyone.

Skills

Our Employment and Skills Plan sets out how we, alongside our partners, will work together over the next four years to contribute to the vision of our SEP's Skilled People, Better Jobs priority by meeting future job demands and enabling people from all communities in the Leeds City Region to secure more and better jobs.

This new plan will seek to contribute to this vision by using the framework below:

Some of the specific schemes and initiatives we are currently delivering are:

LEP SKILLS SERVICE

We offer support to small and medium-sized businesses in the Leeds City Region to train and develop their workforce. We help businesses identify their skills needs then find the right training solutions. Funding of between £500 and £50,000 is available towards the cost of training for eligible businesses. Find out more.

LABOUR MARKET INTELLIGENCE

We support young people to make better informed career choices by providing teachers and advisers with the latest information about the Leeds City Region labour market. Read our labour market report for 2016/2017.

ENTERPRISE ADVISER NETWORK

The Enterprise Adviser Network is our route to equipping our City Region's young people with the employability skills they need to support and inspire their career aspirations. We do this by connecting senior leaders in business to senior leaders in schools, to influence and develop the school's career and enterprise strategy, giving students regular and relevant access to employers. Find out more

#TECHGOALS

Our #techgoals campaign aims to improve digital teaching in schools through the development of teachers and their digital resources, the increase in curricular and extracurricular learning opportunities for our City Region’s young people and through the profiling of our City Region’s future careers opportunities and their pathways to pupils and their influencers. Find out more

SKILLS CAPITAL

Through our Growth Deal, we've secured £79 million to invest between 2015 and 2017 in improving college facilities in Leeds City Region. The aim of this investment is to ensure our key sectors and sources of growth are supported by high quality skills and education facilities. Projects that will make a direct contribution to economic growth and deliver significant improvements to bidders' estates could be eligible for funding. Please note: this programme is not currently open for applications.

LEP APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

Our apprenticeship programme provides a local point of contact for free, independent advice and support about apprenticeships. We support small and medium-sized businesses to recruit apprentices and also help young people to find apprenticeships.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMMES

We've secured close to £10m of devolved government funding to help unemployed young people move into employment, education and training. Working with local partners, we've helped over 3,000 16-24 year olds improve their employment prospects by gaining work experience and skills development. If you’re recruiting, you could benefit from our tailored support for young people which offers 6 months in-work mentoring. Alternatively, if you know a young person who could benefit from our employment programmes, please contact Job CentrePlus who can refer them for support.

INFLUENCING SKILLS PROVISION IN THE INTEREST OF BUSINESSES

We work with a network of schools, colleges, universities and private sector training providers to ensure that the courses and skills development they offer meet the current and future needs of employers in Leeds City Region. This includes identifying and addressing skills gaps in key industries and preparing for major capital investments such as HS2. Find out more via the Leeds City Region Skills Network website.
