Business, innovation and growth

The Leeds City Region’s economic assets are immense.

Geographically we're similar in size to the Munich area. Economically we're bigger than nine European countries, with a £55 billion economy, 100,000 businesses and nine higher education institutions producing talent and innovation.

We aim to realise the City Region’s vast economic potential by strengthening our global competitiveness, encouraging innovation and enterprise, and unlocking private sector growth.

Current work includes:
  • providing more opportunities for businesses to innovate by connecting them with universities, innovation specialists and other businesses to produce new ideas.
  • helping business grow and start up by coordinating and simplifying business support in the City Region. We recently launched an online business support directory, providing information in one place about free local support for SMEs.
  • supporting businesses to export more, working in partnership with UK Trade and Investment and other key partners. Our export campaign, launched in autumn 2012, will highlight the benefits of trading overseas and provide information about sources of support.
  • working with local authorities and other partners to attract more investment into the City Region, developing a detailed understanding of our globally competitive assets and promoting these at key international events.
  • opening up dialogue with private companies to understand the opportunities for growth in our key sectors and help remove barriers to growth.
  • developing and overseeing delivery of the Leeds City Region Digital Infrastructure Plan, setting out a long-term strategy for enhancing our digital infrastructure, and enabling businesses and residents to exploit it
